Searching Using Field Specific Queries

Use field restrictions to select and search on specific data from West km fields. You can also find or exclude documents that contain specified terms. These field restrictions are available only when you search your organization’s documents. When simultaneously searching Westlaw documents and your organization’s documents, (1) these field restrictions are not available, and (2) field restrictions you have specified for your Westlaw documents are converted to regular terms when you search your organization’s documents.

To search field specific information, click the Search tab at the top of the page, scroll down to the available categories of fields, and expand the categories to begin your search or selections. You can define multiple field search criteria. Once you have selected your search terms, click the search button next to the search box to execute the search. The following options are available:

To clear all of the search criteria, click Clear All Fields on the right side, under the search box.

Search field information related to transactions documents. Select to search documents, clauses, and/or defined terms from the Search Only Within check boxes.

1 To type a search in the search box that searches for a judge’s name in both judge fields simultaneously, type jp,js(judgename), e.g., jp,js(halbrooks).

The court, doc type, and jurisdiction fields are phrase indexed, so typing these searches in the search box requires you search for the terms exactly, including punctuation and spacing. As an alternative to typing the complete exact phrase, you can use the root expander (!) at the end of the term, for example, docty(memo!).

Document Fields

Specify terms that must or must not display in documents in your result. Type one or more terms within the sections labeled Find documents that have or Exclude documents that have.

Profile Fields

The availability of profile fields depends on your organization's metadata.
